Asking Questions to Improve Student Learning and Sustain an Inquiry-Based Culture

Formulating one's own questions is an essential skill for learning, especially with the increasing need for effective AI prompts. The Question Formulation Technique is a concise and powerful protocol that enables learners to produce their own questions, improve their questions, and strategize how to use them. This can be applied across all grade levels, subject areas, and with all kinds of learners. It can help create a deeper culture of inquiry: in your classroom, school, district, and/or organization.

In this completely asynchronous course (using Schoology platform) we will learn how to use the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) and ways to apply it to your learners. We will then explore how to expand the use of the QFT from a one-off activity to a fully integrated and sustained inquiry-driven practice. You will examine your own relationships to question formulation and explore the connections between questions, power, and agency - connections that are relevant in and beyond classroom settings.

If you have taken a course on the QFT, this will build and expand on that knowledge to widen its scope in your teaching and school community. If this is your first experience with the QFT, scaffolding will be provided to build your understanding, so that you can apply the strategies to your teaching practice and/or school community.
