Everyday Teaching Activities for Social Emotional Learning

This 5 week asynchronous book study will guide you in understanding the components that are the foundation of social, emotional learning (SEL) and character development (SECD). Drawing on the latest research, this book offers techniques for how to develop the relevant skills that form an SEL approach at every age level in the classroom. You will be guided through steps for maximizing the potential of a caring classroom learning environment through the lens of the 5 SEL competencies (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management and responsible decision making).

These SEL competencies will set the stage to develop skills in the domains of: Self- and Social Awareness, Empathy and Perspective Taking, Self-regulation and Communication, Relationship Skills and Social Problem Solving. Participants will leave with deepened awareness of each domain using a skills-oriented approach to explore SEL and its connectedness to daily routines within their respective learning spaces with techniques for:

  • Setting the stage

  • Norm setting

  • Behavioral expectations

  • Modeling

  • Scaffolding

  • Student handouts

  • Rubrics

  • Facilitated questioning

  • Self-reflection exercises (for teachers)

Suggested mindset shifts will wrap-up the course for how you can maintain the skills introduced through a series of reflective exercises that will help you sustain a positive classroom management practice and culture. NOTE: Participants will need to obtain a copy of the book, Nurturing Students’ Behavior- Everyday Teaching Activities for Social-Emotional Learning, by Jeffrey S. Kress and Maurice J. Elias, prior to the start of the course.
